Cederberg, Western Cape

Stay on the rock. Three basecamps line the Pakhuis Pass road — Traveller's Rest, de Pakhuys and the Kliphuis campsite — all within reach of the boulders. Book well ahead for the winter peak.

Finding them after dark

Most people drive in from Cape Town, often arriving after dark in a hire car — so save the pin before you leave signal. de Pakhuys is at GPS −32.1204, 19.0594 (open in Maps), about 26 km from Clanwilliam on the R364. Traveller's Rest is a little further on, ~34 km (find on Maps), and Kliphuis is on the pass itself (find on Maps). Confirm the exact turn-off with each place — signal drops on the pass.

Which basecamp is right for you?

Traveller's Rest is the classic choice — comfortable cottages plus a restaurant and farmstall, and it hires out crash pads and sells permits, so you can arrive light and sort everything on site. de Pakhuys spans everything from cottages to camping and has its own bouldering on the farm. The Kliphuis campsite is the budget, back-to-basics CapeNature option. All three sit on the same Pakhuis Pass road, in the middle of the bouldering.

Can you camp?

Yes — de Pakhuys and Kliphuis both have camping. It's the cheapest way to stay in the thick of it, but remember the season is winter: nights are cold, so bring a proper warm sleeping bag and a mat. See the packing list for the full kit.

When should you book?

For the June to August peak, book as far ahead as you can — Rocklands fills with international climbers and the closest, best-value beds go first. Outside the peak you have more room to move, but it still pays to lock in your basecamp before you buy your flights.
